So finally, after searching for years I found it!
I'll tell you the story: (short version)
When I was 15 years old,
I had a job at a library, from 1800 - 2100 tuesdays and thursdays
At night waiting at the bus stop after work
I was listening to my walkman to keep the dark night out...
I had borrowed a cassette (cause that was the thing then) from my older sister
It was a bit different from my liking, and obviously she didn't like it since she lent it to me..
After a while I tucked to one of the songs
and most of the lyrics stuck to my brain..
I forgot what band it was,
and it has been itching ever since..
I've tried to search for it on the web
and tried to search for it in the music sharing network..
But nothing...
Finally today..
I found it!
And here it is:
From Dr. Hook:
STRINGS
Strings, there's always strings,
attached to the things,
we think are free to take
Lines, thin shiny lines,
so very fine,
but so very hard to break
Threads, just hanging threads,
weaving a web that we can hardly see
But Oh,
we feel the strings,
pulling on you,
pulling on me
Strings,
invisible strings,
tying our wings,
keeping us on the ground
Strands,
soft silky strands,
takin' our hands and leavin' them tightly bound
Vines, clinging vines,
twisting they wind,
covering everything
Strings,
pulling on you,
pulling on me
So tangled together,
we don't want to be free
We're hurting and crying,
but trying endlessly
Strings,
there's always strings,
attached to the things,
we think are free to take
Lines, thin shiny lines,
so very fine,
but so very hard to break
Threads, tiny threads,
weaving a web that we can hardly see
But Oh,
we feel the strings,
pulling on you,
pulling on me
Oh, strings,
we feel the strings,
pulling on you,
pulling on me
pulling on you,
pulling on me
pulling on you,
pulling on me
pulling on you,
they're pulling on me....

I hear you...I feel them over here too.
could this be 'Dr Hook and the Medicine Show'?
Yes Doggy, it seems to be!
I would like to hear the song again. It has been playing in my head every now and then in all these years.. I was so pleased when I finally found the lyrics!
i LOVE this song - and well the band, too. if i knew how to turn an old album into an mp3 i'd happily send the track to you. your sister must be a few years older than you...
